The Zoe Valle
Library is a community library serving Chester and the
surrounding area. It is supported by charitable donations
to the Zoe Valle Lightfoote Endowment Fund which is
managed by a Board of Trustees and administered by the
Municipality of Chester. The Board hold an annual general
meeting, to which the public is invited, to receive
reports on financial and administrative matters. The Zoe Valle Library Newsletter is published twice a year and is intended to keep the community informed of developments and activities involving the Library. If you have any questions about the Library, you can drop by or call during operating hours and speak to the librarian, Glen MacLeod at 275-2190. |
The Zoe Valle Library had an early Christmas this year. As a result of our Fundraising Campaign, over 85 donors generously offered support totatling more than $7000 by the time of the annual general meeting on October 22.
As you man or may not know, the Zoe Valle Lightfoot Endowment Fund is the sole source of revenue for the upkeep and maintenance of the Library. While the Municipality of Chester administers the Fund and always has a meember on the Board of Trustees, it has no financial commitment to the Libratry. The Library receives no money from taxpayers. Only through the generous support of caring individuals is the Library able to be there for all to enjoy The fund, through investments, generates just enough income to cover costs. Large expenditures, such as the recently replaced furnace and water heater, and lower interest rates can deplete the Fund. For this reason, from time to time, it is necessary to hold a fundraising campaign to bering the Fund back to a safe level.
This summer's fundraising campaign has managed to stablize the Fund. We will have to keep a close eye o interest rates and increasing costs from now on and hope we will not have to mount another formal campaign for serveral years. There will be informal fundraising events from time to time to combat inflation and we hope you will keep us in mind.
Donations may be sent at any time to Steve Graham at the Municipal office in Chester (P.O. Box 151 King Street, Chester, B0J 1J0) All donations over ten dollars are tax deductible and a receipt for income tax purposes will be issued.

Yet another little mystery has come to light at Ihe Zoe Vnlle Library. A copy of William Lyon Mackenzie King's book Industry and Humanity has been found. Inside the front cover is an inscription that reads:
"To the Zoe Valle Library Chester, Nova Scotia With all good wishes.
W.L. Mackenzie King
Laurier House Ottawa, 1925"
How did King, then Prime Minister for the second time, know of the Library? This n:ns no promotional copy of the book, since he had written it ten years earlicr in 1928. Zoe's house had just being turned over to the Women's Institute for use as a library. Perhaps he had heard of it from a friend who summered here. If anyone has any clues to this little mystery, please let us. To celebrate this connection, the Heritage Society had donated to the Library a framed pphotograph of King from about the time of the inscription. It hangs in the front hall.

Do you have memories or stories about the Zoe Valle Library, or perhaps you know someone who does? So little has been written down about the Library over the seventr years of its life, an effort is being made to collect any and all information related to it.
Please write down your stories, anecdotes, etc., even as just a letter and we will try and publish these in the newsletter and keep them on file. If we get enough material, perhaps a little souvenir book will be put together that would preserve these memories fro future generations. Anything at all would be appreciated.
